Page 7 of this 1976 gift catalog has some great park souvenirs.  The Country Bear Jamboree record and the Super 8 home movies feature the Big D logo on their covers.  I still need to get my hands on those to add to my collection.

So Much Dust

Leading up to Halloween, it is only appropriate that I share some early Haunted Mansion items.  Although, I must say that in reviewing my earliest Walt Disney World guides, the Haunted Mansion does not get much coverage.  It appears in all of the early guides but typically is overshadowed by other Liberty Square attractions.  The pages above are from a 1983 coloring book.  The Haunted Mansion gets 2 of 8 pages in the Liberty Square section of "20 Magical Years."  

While doing my research, I learned an interesting fact about the dust used to create the old effect in the mansion. "Local legend has it that enough has been used since the park's 1971 opening to bury the mansion."  That began appearing in WDW guides around 1990.  Imagine how big the pile of dust would be now.
And those cobwebs....well that's a secret process.

Coloring Frontierland

As we continue our tour through Walt Disney World: a coloring book, Mickey and Minnie lead us into Frontierland.  There are 14 pages for the Old West, several featuring characters exploring Tom Sawyer Island.  Grandma Duck is giving her disapproving glare, this time at a dancer from the Diamond Horseshoe Saloon in the last image from this section.
Liberty Square only gets 8 pages to show off their few attractions.  Donald is shaking Lincoln's hand in the Hall of Presidents and Morty & Ferdie are running from the Haunted Mansion ghosts.

American Ghostly Organist

This coming week, the American Guild of Organists will host their biennial National Convention in Boston.  (you can ask me why I know this offline)  And this just happens to be the next card in the series.  I doubt they will be inviting this 'ghostly organist' to play his 'haunting refrain' for them.  This early Dexter Press postcard not only features the Florida Flog logo but also the Liberty Square icon, the Liberty Bell, on the back of the card.

Trembling Trio

This week, on a business trip, I stayed at the most haunted hotel in Texas.  Ironically this Haunted Mansion postcard is next up in the series.  This Dexter Press card was originally printed with the Florida Flag and then reprinted later in black without the flag.  I was a 'courageous guest,' BTW.

Someone or something has made off with the previous cards in this series.  There is a gap between 0110219 and this dp card numbered 224.  This early card has the Florida Flag logo and as a DP card, features the icon from its location.  In this case, the Liberty Bell representing Liberty Square.

Wait Time for Haunted Mansion

So what do you think the wait time would have been for the Haunted Mansion back in 1971?  Take a look at that line in this early WDW postcard and the number of guests on the Admiral Joe Fowler.  Also, note the lack of foliage in the early days of the park.  This particular printing of this 0111 series postcard utilized the Florida Flag logo to differentiate Walt Disney World from the West Coast original.

Happy Easter!  Happy Spring!
Let's celebrate with this cheery tin.  It features 5 great scenes from around the Magic Kingdom.  The original Big D/Globe Head logo is in gold on the lid made to resemble a brass plate. The tin measures 8" x 5.5" x 5".     

The tin was filled with taffy and sold for $15.95 in 1995.  How do I know?  Because this was the last 'in park' purchase I made on my first trip to WDW as an adult before the official logo changed in 1996 in celebration of the 25th Anniversary.  It is one of the few items in my collection that has not had a previous owner.
