Dixie Crystals Sugar Packet

Apparently, people collect lots of interesting thing.  (Who am I to judge, right?)  But in looking for information about these items, I learned of Sucrology, "the hobby of collecting sugar sachets and/or packets."  Thank you, Wikipedia.


Here is a set of Dixie Crystals sugar packets, "The Official Sugar in Walt Disney World."  The set contains seven different packets.  Each packet has a photo from WDW on one side and the globe head logo on both.  I'm not sure when these packets were made but the images do contain the Walt Disney Productions copyright which I don't seem to find on the earlier 70's items.

The packets feature some great shots of The Magic Kingdom: The Hall of Presidents, Cinderella Castle, Rivers of America and Main Street USA, as well as The Contemporary Resort.  You can see another set of these on Flickr, posted by Sucrologist, Sugar Packet Chad.

These two are not the sharpest of Disney characters and one of them must have written the first description on the postcard.  They misspelled Brer Bar but it was corrected on later printings.  (I understand the name has been used for a refreshment location)  This card is the first of 3 in the series to only feature "classic characters 'come to life.'"

Wait Time for Haunted Mansion

So what do you think the wait time would have been for the Haunted Mansion back in 1971?  Take a look at that line in this early WDW postcard and the number of guests on the Admiral Joe Fowler.  Also, note the lack of foliage in the early days of the park.  This particular printing of this 0111 series postcard utilized the Florida Flag logo to differentiate Walt Disney World from the West Coast original.

Happy Easter!  Happy Spring!
Let's celebrate with this cheery tin.  It features 5 great scenes from around the Magic Kingdom.  The original Big D/Globe Head logo is in gold on the lid made to resemble a brass plate. The tin measures 8" x 5.5" x 5".     

The tin was filled with taffy and sold for $15.95 in 1995.  How do I know?  Because this was the last 'in park' purchase I made on my first trip to WDW as an adult before the official logo changed in 1996 in celebration of the 25th Anniversary.  It is one of the few items in my collection that has not had a previous owner.

Here is a planning guide for Walt Disney World from early 1981, prior to the official launch of their Tencennial celebration.  The cover uses the right-justified Big-D/Globe Head logo similar to the GAF style logos of the mid-70's but not identical.  

"Seasons in the fun!  Choosing the right time of year to visit is an important ingredient for a great vacation."  The opening layout of the guide shares the best reasons (and images) for visiting in any season....including Winter's "sweater weather."

'Set aside two full days...to take in all six themed "lands" of the Magic Kingdom.'  The guide also highlights the EPCOT Center Preview theatre where guests may see a presentation on '...the most exciting new entertainment concept in the history of Walt Disney Productions.'  

I had the privilege of seeing the EPCOT Center Preview theatre in Town Square.  At 10, I remember thinking that it looked too 'educational.'

Drinks for Six

Walt Disney World Metal Drink Tray

This early Walt Disney World metal drink tray serves six.  It measures approximately 10.5 inches in diameter.  The six recessed glass holes are about 2.5 inches in diameter and about .25 inch deep.

Each of the glass holders features a different scene from the Magic Kingdom.  I find the vultures from The Jungle Cruise a very appealing choice for a beverage tray.

I do not know the exact age of this piece but would assume that it is early 1970's because of the artist renderings instead of real photos and the lady's daisy dress in the Main Street, USA picture.
